Kaziranga is open
The park shuts for the monsoon when the Brahmaputra floods it. Gates open around November and the grass is low enough to actually see through. No winter, no rhinos.

Cranes at Sangti
Black-necked cranes winter in the Sangti valley near Dirang and nowhere else in this part of India. They arrive in the cold months and they leave. There is no other window.

The plateau clears
Sohra spends half the year inside a cloud. In winter it lifts, and you get the forty-kilometre view over the plains of Bangladesh - and, on a new moon, the best night sky in the country.

Winter light on the tea
Low gold light across the estates, cold mornings on the bungalow veranda, and the plucking season winding down. The tea country is at its most photogenic and its least humid.

The Siang runs
Rafting the Siang at Pasighat only works from about November to March, when the flow drops out of the Himalaya to something sane. Outside that window it is simply not run.

The roads behave
No landslides, no leeches, no washed-out afternoons. Everything that makes monsoon travel a negotiation simply stops being a problem.

What you give up
The waterfalls. Nohkalikai and the Sohra cliff face are at their most thunderous in the monsoon, and by January they are a thinner, quieter version of themselves. If falls in full spate are the whole reason you are coming, come in July and accept that you will see less of everything else. Winter trades drama for clarity.

One thing we will talk you out of
Deep-winter Tawang. Sela Pass sits at 13,700 feet and closes without warning in snow, and there is no second road in. We will happily run Arunachal for you in winter as far as Dirang and Sangti for the cranes - but if Tawang is the reason for the trip, we will steer you to spring or autumn rather than sell you a pass that might be shut.

Why we are saying this in August
Winter is the season everyone wants, and the parts of it that are worth having are small. A Brahmaputra sailing carries a fixed handful of cabins and runs weekly at best. Kaziranga's better lodges fill over Christmas and New Year. Garo Hills homestays and the Siang river camps have tiny inventory in absolute terms. None of that is a countdown timer - it is just how small the good supply is. If winter is the plan, talk to us while there is still something to choose from.
