The Northeast isn't one climate — it's several, stacked from the Brahmaputra plains up to 15,000-foot passes. The 'best time' depends entirely on which corner you're chasing, so here's how we think about it when planning trips.
October to April — the safe, all-round window
For most first-time visitors this is the sweet spot. Skies are clear, roads are open, and both Meghalaya's hills and Assam's wildlife parks are at their best. Kaziranga's safari gates typically open from November, and the light on the tea gardens in winter is superb.
If you want Arunachal's high circuits — Tawang, Dirang, Mechuka — aim for late March through October, when the mountain roads and passes are reliably open.
The monsoon has its own magic (June to September)
Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are among the wettest places on earth, and the monsoon is when the living-root bridges and waterfalls are at full, thundering force. It's atmospheric and green beyond belief — just pack proper rain gear and keep the itinerary flexible for road conditions.
Festival timing
If you can plan around it, Nagaland's Hornbill Festival (early December) and Assam's Bihu are unforgettable. These book out early, so start planning months ahead.
