Where you'll stay
Every night is a heritage house - a planter's bungalow in a working tea estate, a lodge on stilts at Kaziranga, a Jorhat family home, and the Shillong plateau. Between them they hold fewer rooms than one mid-size hotel, which is why we book them first.

The plan is all here. The price depends on your dates, rooms and who is travelling, so tell us those and we send an exact quote by WhatsApp & email - usually within 24 hours.
Most of Assam's finest buildings are not monuments. They are planters' bungalows built in the tea rush of the 1860s. They are wooden houses on stilts above a river, and family homes that have taken guests for three generations.
On this trip they are the reason to come, not just a bed between sights. Nine nights take you through the tea districts, the rhino grasslands of Kaziranga, the satras of Majuli and the cloud plateau of Meghalaya. You stay in heritage houses the whole way.
Neither state needs a permit on a foreign passport. The longest drive is under five hours.
The journey at a glance
10 days, shaped around you.
- Day 01
Arrival on the Brahmaputra
Guwahati Airport → Guwahati
Met inside the terminal at Guwahati and driven into the city, which sits on a bend of the Brahmaputra wide enough to lose the far bank in haze. Nothing is scheduled today beyond arrival - most people reach Assam at the end of a long flight and the trip is better for a quiet first evening. If you land early enough there is time for the river at dusk, which is the best hour it has.
- Airport meet & assist
- Private transfer
- Brahmaputra at dusk
Guwahati - boutique hotel on the river side of the city
- Day 02
Silk weavers, then into tea country
Guwahati → Sualkuchi → Balipara (≈ 4 hrs)
North out of the city to Sualkuchi, a village on the river where several thousand looms still weave Assam's golden muga silk - a fibre produced nowhere else on earth. You will hear it before you see it. Then east into the tea districts, and by late afternoon through the gates of a working estate to a planter's bungalow built when these gardens were first cut out of the forest. High ceilings, deep verandas, and a lawn that runs into the tea.
- Sualkuchi silk village
- Working handlooms
- Muga silk
- Heritage bungalow check-in
Balipara - heritage planter's bungalow inside a working tea estate Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Day 03
The Jia Bhoroli, and a working estate
Balipara · Nameri
A slow day on the estate and the river beside it. Nameri is walked rather than driven - three or four kilometres of flat forest with a forest guide and an armed guard, which is standard practice here and nothing to be alarmed by - and the Jia Bhoroli runs clear and quick alongside it, gentle enough to raft in the dry season. Back at the bungalow for the part of a tea estate nobody photographs: the plucking, the withering loft, and a tasting done properly.
- Nameri jungle walk
- Birding
- Jia Bhoroli rafting
- Tea factory and tasting
Balipara - heritage planter's bungalow Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Day 04
East to the grasslands
Balipara → Kaziranga (≈ 4 hrs)
South and east across the Brahmaputra plain to Kaziranga, where the grass grows higher than an elephant and the park holds roughly two-thirds of the world's greater one-horned rhinoceros. Your lodge sits on the park boundary in timber cottages raised on stilts above a tributary - close enough that the first safari goes out before the light softens, if the timing works.
- Drive through the tea belt
- Lodge check-in
- Afternoon jeep safari
Kaziranga - cottages on stilts on the park boundary Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Day 05
Two ranges, two safaris
Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga is divided into four ranges and they are genuinely different places - Kohora's grassland, Bagori's rhino density, Agoratoli's forest and its birds. Two jeep safaris today, morning and afternoon, in different ranges and both private to you, with the lodge's own naturalist. The rhinos are close to routine. The interest is in everything else: wild water buffalo, swamp deer, hoolock gibbon in the tall trees, and a bird list that passes a hundred species in a good week.
- Morning jeep safari
- Afternoon jeep safari, second range
- Resident naturalist
- Birding
Kaziranga - cottages on stilts on the park boundary Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Day 06
Into upper Assam
Kaziranga → Jorhat (≈ 3 hrs)
A last drive into the park at first light, then east to Jorhat - the centre of Assam's tea trade, and the town the planters built their clubs in. Tonight is the one stay on this trip that is not an institution: a family home that takes a handful of guests, where dinner is cooked in the house and eaten with the family if you would like the company. Rice, river fish, the bitter greens that open every proper Assamese meal.
- Final morning safari
- Drive to Jorhat
- Home-cooked Assamese dinner
- An evening with the family
Jorhat - heritage family home Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Day 07
Majuli, the river island
Jorhat → Nimati Ghat → Majuli → Jorhat
A ferry from Nimati Ghat onto the largest river island in the world, and an older clock. Majuli's satras are Vaishnavite monasteries founded in the sixteenth century, and they still teach dance, drum and mask-making the way they always have - the mask-makers at Chamaguri work in bamboo, clay and cow dung, and will show you how. Potters at Salmora still throw without a wheel. Back across the water before the light goes.
- Brahmaputra ferry
- Satra visits
- Chamaguri mask-makers
- Salmora potters
Jorhat - heritage family home Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Day 08
Across to the Khasi Hills
Jorhat → Guwahati → Shillong
The long transfer of the trip, and the one that changes everything. Out of the Assam plain and up onto the Meghalaya plateau, where the air drops several degrees in an hour and pine replaces tea. Shillong was the summer capital of British Assam and still carries it - a golf course, a cathedral, an old bazaar. Your stay is up above the lake rather than in the town, which is the difference between hearing traffic and hearing water.
- Transfer to Meghalaya
- Umiam Lake
- Shillong old town
Shillong - heritage property above Umiam Lake Breakfast & Dinner
- Day 09
A sacred grove, and the edge of the plateau
Shillong → Mawphlang → Sohra → Shillong
Mawphlang is a Khasi sacred forest walked with a village guide, where nothing may be removed - not a leaf - and the monoliths are older than the records of who set them. It is the most interesting hour in Meghalaya. Then on to Sohra, which the British called Cherrapunji, where the plateau simply ends: Nohkalikai drops 340 metres in a single fall and the Seven Sisters go over the edge towards the Bangladesh plain.
- Mawphlang sacred grove
- Khasi monoliths
- Nohkalikai Falls
- Seven Sisters Falls
- Sohra escarpment
Shillong - heritage property above Umiam Lake Breakfast & Dinner
- Day 10
Departure
Shillong → Guwahati Airport (≈ 3.5 hrs)
Down off the plateau and back across the Brahmaputra to Guwahati airport for your flight out. If your flight is late in the day there is time for Kamakhya on the way, on its hill above the river - one of the oldest and most visited temples in India, and a very different note to end on.
- Descent to the plains
- Kamakhya Temple, if time allows
- Airport drop
Departure Breakfast
