Sohra - still widely called Cherrapunji - sits on a plateau that falls away into Bangladesh, which is why the waterfalls here are so absurdly tall. Nohkalikai is India's tallest plunge fall; Seven Sisters spreads across the cliff face; Wei Sawdong drops into three turquoise tiers down a steep and slippery staircase.

Add Mawsmai's limestone caves and Arwah for something less trafficked. Best in the shoulder months - in deep monsoon the falls are at their most spectacular and the views frequently at their least.
