Ziro is the plateau the Apatani have farmed for centuries without a plough and, until recently, without a wheel. They grow rice and fish in the same flooded field - the paddy-cum-fish system - and they do it so efficiently that it sits on UNESCO's tentative list and gets written up in agricultural journals.
The valley itself is unlike anywhere else in Arunachal: flat, wide and geometrically green, with bamboo groves and pine ridges around the edge. You stay in an Apatani home, walk the villages of Hong and Hija, and eat rice, smoked meat and apong. The older women bear facial tattoos and nose plugs from a practice that ended in the 1970s - which makes this a window that is genuinely closing.
