Tawang Monastery is the largest in India and the second largest in the world, founded in the 17th century and still home to hundreds of monks. The drive up is the other half of the experience - over Sela Pass at 13,700 feet, through country that empties out the higher you climb.
From Tawang you can run out to Bumla Pass on the Indo-China border at over 15,000 feet and to Sangestar (Madhuri) Lake, both subject to permits and weather. Monpa homestays in the surrounding villages are the stays we'd push you towards over the hotels in town.
