Bumla is a day out of Tawang and one of the very few places a civilian can stand on the Indo-China border. The road climbs past Sangestar Tso to over 15,000 feet, through country that is rock, ice and army, and there is a handshake point where Indian and Chinese troops meet on ceremonial days.
Sangestar - everyone calls it Madhuri Lake, after a film shot here - was formed when the 1950 Assam earthquake dammed a stream, and dead tree trunks still stand in the shallows. It is bleak and beautiful and extremely cold. Both stops need army permits arranged in Tawang and are run by local union vehicles rather than your own car.
