Most of Meghalaya is Christian, and in December Shillong feels it. The streets fill with lights, carols drift out of every neighbourhood and the churches stay open late.
This guide covers how the city keeps Christmas and where to go. It also covers the weather, getting there, where to stay and what to know before you book.
Why Shillong does Christmas well
The story starts with Thomas Jones, a Welsh missionary. He reached Sohra in 1841 and was the first to write the Khasi language down, in the Roman script.
Welsh missionaries left churches on ridge after ridge, and a love of hymn singing. Christmas here is part of everyday life, not a show put on for visitors.
The lights at Police Bazar
Police Bazar, which locals call Khyndailad, is the heart of it. In December its streets become a sea of colour, and visitors come from across India to see them.
Elsewhere the lights are quieter. Expect stars and angels on porches rather than a light show.
Before the big day, the locality councils run cleaning drives. Shillong likes its streets spotless for Christmas.
The lights are best after dark, and the streets are busiest in the early evening. Walk rather than drive. The centre is compact, and traffic barely moves in the last days before Christmas.

Carols and midnight services
In the week before Christmas, groups go from house to house singing carols, often with guitars. Gospel bands sing on the streets too.
On Christmas Eve the churches hold candlelit midnight services. Afterwards many families share a midnight Christmas Tea.
The grandest church is the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians at Laitumkhrah. The first church there was wooden and burned down in 1936. The present one was begun that same year, and its stained glass came from France in 1947.
Going to a service as a visitor
If you want to attend a service, remember these are working churches, not tourist sights. Dress warmly and modestly, and arrive early. The big churches fill up on Christmas Eve.
Service times change by parish and by year. Ask your hotel or the church office a day or two before. Eat before you go, and plan the ride back to your room.
Keep your phone in your pocket during the service. Take photos outside, before or after.
Food and shopping
The feast centres on Khasi dishes, with cakes from the town's bakeries. Expect queues at the cake shops in the last days before Christmas.
Christmas Eve is the busiest shopping day. Iewduh, Police Bazar and Laitumkhrah all pack out, and the traffic jams with them.

Winter Tales, 17 to 19 December
Meghalaya Tourism runs Winter Tales, a December festival at Ward's Lake. The 2026 edition is on 17, 18 and 19 December, the week before Christmas.
It brings together local craftspeople, designers, musicians, chefs and storytellers. Expect a market of handmade goods, local food, music and workshops. The sixth edition ran in December 2025.
Tickets are sold through the festival's own website. Prices were not listed when we checked in October, so look there before you go.
Weather and what to pack
December in Shillong is cool and dry. Average highs are around 16°C and lows around 7°C, and nights can feel colder. Pack a warm jacket.
Ask whether your room has a heater, and pack a warm layer for indoors too. Bring gloves and a cap for late services and night walks.
Dry weather is good news for the rest of the trip. The waterfalls run lower than in the monsoon, but the views are clear.
Crowds and booking
The week from Christmas to New Year is the busiest in the city. Book your room and car early, and allow extra time to cross town on Christmas Eve.
Fix your car and airport transfer when you book the room, not later. If your dates are flexible, come in the week before. You get Winter Tales, the carols and the lights, with thinner crowds.
How to get there
Fly into Guwahati (GAU). The airport is about 128 km from Shillong, and the drive takes about three hours.
There is no railway in Meghalaya. Trains stop at Guwahati, and the last part is by road. Buses run between the two cities, but a private car is easier with luggage in the cold.
Allow more time on the days just before Christmas. The road and the city both fill up.
Where to stay
Police Bazar puts you in the middle of the lights, the shops and Ward's Lake. It is also the noisiest area at Christmas.
Laitumkhrah is home to the cathedral and plenty of cafes. It suits anyone who wants the midnight service on their doorstep.
Upper Shillong is quieter and colder, with wide views. You need a car to reach the centre, and at Christmas that means traffic.
A five-day Christmas plan
Day one, 23 December: fly into Guwahati and drive up to Shillong. Check in and walk Police Bazar after dark for the first look at the lights.
Day two, 24 December: a slow morning, then the shops and bakeries before the rush. Rest in the afternoon. Go to a midnight service at the cathedral or a church near your stay.
Day three, 25 December: a slow day after the late night. Take a short drive to Ward's Lake or Upper Shillong, and an early night.
Day four, 26 December: a full day in Sohra for the waterfalls and caves. Or stay a night on the plateau and walk to the root bridges the next morning.
Day five: drive back to Guwahati for your flight. Leave early, since the holiday traffic runs both ways.
How many days you need
Three nights covers Shillong over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Five or six lets you add Sohra, the root bridges or Dawki once the holiday is over.
If you want Winter Tales too, arrive by 17 December and stay through the week. That makes a longer, slower trip, and you see the city get ready for Christmas day by day.
With kids or older parents
Christmas in Shillong suits families well. The lights and carols are free, and the centre is easy to walk in short bursts.
Cold is the main thing to plan for. Keep evenings short for small children and older parents, and pick a room with a heater. Our guide to Meghalaya with kids and elderly parents has more.

Coming earlier in December? The Hornbill Festival runs near Kohima from 1 to 10 December.
