Four days, two hill stations' worth of weather, and no wasted morning.
Day one is Kamakhya and the Brahmaputra. Day two takes you up to Shillong. Day three is a full day on the Sohra escarpment for the waterfalls.
It is built for a long weekend from Kolkata, Delhi or Bangalore. It is also the trip we most often send first-timers on, before they come back for the fortnight.

Guwahati - Kamakhya and the river
Arrival
Met at Guwahati Airport or Railway Station and taken straight to your hotel to drop bags. Then Kamakhya on the Nilachal hill - one of the country's most important Shakti Peethas, and a working temple, which is why we buy the VIP darshan pass rather than put you in a three-hour queue. The Navagraha temple of the nine planets sits on the next hill. Close the day with a sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra.

Kamakhya closes to darshan for the four days of the Ambubachi Mela each June. If your dates touch it, we will say so before you book.

Guwahati → Shillong
Check out after breakfast and climb into Meghalaya - roughly three hours, and you feel the air change. Stop at Umiam Lake, which the Khasi call Barapani, a wide reservoir in pine hills. In Shillong: Elephant Falls in its three tiers, the Don Bosco Museum for seven floors on the indigenous cultures of the whole North East, and Laitlum Canyon in the late afternoon, where the plateau simply ends. Evening free in Police Bazar.

- Day 03
The Sohra escarpment
Shillong → Sohra → Shillong
A full day south to Sohra, still widely called Cherrapunji. Nohkalikai, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres, then the Seven Sisters Falls dropping off the escarpment towards the Sylhet plains, the Garden of Caves at Laitmawsiang, and Arwah or Mawsmai cave, limestone passages with fossils in the rock. Back in Shillong by evening.

This is a full day with about two hours of driving each way - the trade-off for not moving hotels on a four-day trip. If you would rather sleep on the plateau, say so and we will restructure it at no extra cost; the price only moves if the room rate does.

Shillong → Guwahati Airport
After breakfast, check out and transfer down to Guwahati Airport or Railway Station - about three and a half hours, so we set the departure against your flight time and not against the clock. Afternoon and evening flights suit this itinerary best.
