This post gives you two Assam plans, day by day. Five days covers Kaziranga and Guwahati. Seven days adds a night in a tea bungalow and a night on Majuli.
Both are built from trips we run. Each comes with drive times, safari tips, the Majuli ferry and what it costs.
Which plan suits you
Pick five days if wildlife is the point. You get three Kaziranga Safaris in three ranges, and a morning at Kamakhya before you fly.
Pick seven days if you want the whole feel of the state. You trade one safari for a tea estate, a river crossing and the monasteries of Majuli.
Both start and end in Guwahati. Neither needs a permit, and neither goes above the plains.
Three things that shape the plan
Kaziranga keeps a season. It closes every monsoon and reopened for 2026-27 on 3 October. November to April is the best time. Not every range opens on day one, so check which are running.
The Majuli ferry is not fixed. It runs from Neamati Ghat near Jorhat to Kamalabari Ghat on the island. Low water stopped it in October 2024, and again several times in 2026.
Drives are long. Guwahati to Kaziranga is four to five hours, and Kaziranga to Jorhat about three. The road back from Jorhat to Guwahati is a full day.
Assam in 5 days: Kaziranga and Guwahati
Day 1, Guwahati to Kaziranga. Drive east through Nagaon, four to five hours. Tea gardens line the last stretch. If you land by late morning, stop at the Orchid and Biodiversity Park at Durgapur, near Kohora. Sleep near Bokakhat.
Day 2, two safaris. The morning Kaziranga Safari goes into the Central range at Kohora, the best start for rhinos. The afternoon one goes into the Western range at Bagori, which is more open. This season the slots run about 7:30 to 10:00 and 1:30 to 3:00.
Day 3, the Eastern range and Kakochang. A dawn safari at Agoratoli, the range for wetland birds. In the afternoon, drive out to Kakochang Falls, about 13 km from Bokakhat. The old ruins at Deoparbat, near Numaligarh, are close by.
Day 4, back to Guwahati. Leave after breakfast. In the evening, watch the sun go down over the Brahmaputra.
Day 5, Kamakhya and home. Go up the Nilachal hill early, before the queues build. Then drive to the airport.
Assam in 7 days: rhino, tea and the river island
Day 1, Guwahati to Kaziranga. The same drive along the south bank, about five hours with stops. Sleep near Kohora.
Day 2, two ranges, two safaris. Central range in the morning, Western range at Bagori in the afternoon.
Day 3, into tea country. About three hours east to a heritage planter's bungalow near Jorhat. Walk the garden with someone who works it. Then see the factory, where the leaf is withered, rolled and fired. Dinner on the veranda.
Day 4, Majuli. Drive to Neamati Ghat and cross the Brahmaputra by ferry, with cars loaded beside you. Visit the satras at Kamalabari and Auniati. At Samaguri, watch the masks being made for the island's dance-dramas. Sleep on the island.
Day 5, back across the river. A slow morning, perhaps with the Salmora potters, who shape pots without a wheel. Then the ferry back and the long drive to Guwahati.
Day 6, Guwahati. Kamakhya early, the older temples later, and the river at dusk.
Day 7, departure.

Majuli: how to handle the ferry
Treat the ferry as the one weak link in the plan. There is no official timetable we would ask you to trust. Sailings depend on the water level, the light and the boats running that week.
So check the ferry locally the week you travel, and again the evening before. Get to the ghat early. Do not plan to catch the last boat of the day.
Keep a plan B. If the ferry is off, stay in Jorhat and use the spare day for the tea estate. If a private bathroom with steady hot water matters to you, base yourself in Jorhat and make Majuli a long day trip.
Save a day: fly out of Jorhat
The drive from Majuli back to Guwahati is the longest of the trip. If your onward flight allows, fly out of Jorhat instead. It saves you about six hours in the car.
Then the seven-day plan becomes six days, and you lose only the last Guwahati day. Ask us to price both versions.
Who each plan suits
The five-day plan suits wildlife lovers, photographers and families with children. You unpack once and spend the days in the park, not in the car.
The seven-day plan suits travellers who want culture as much as animals. It also suits older parents, as long as they are happy with one long drive and a ferry. There are no steep climbs and no altitude.
Travelling as a couple? Both plans work at a slower pace too. Drop a safari and take the afternoon on the veranda.
Where you stay
Near Kaziranga, you stay in a resort close to the park gates. For dawn safaris, being near the right gate matters more than the room.
In tea country, the bungalows have very few rooms and often go to one party. Book them first. On Majuli, stays are simple and run by local families, in garden cottages or Mishing stilt houses. Some have hot water by the bucket.
What it costs
These are our own package prices. All are indicative, per person, on 2 adults sharing, land only.
Our Kaziranga Wildlife Escape, three nights with three safaris in three ranges, is from ₹28,500. The five-day plan above adds a Guwahati day to it.
Our Rhino, Tea and the River Island, five nights with Kaziranga, a tea bungalow and Majuli, is from ₹33,500. The seven-day plan adds a Guwahati day.
Park entry, camera and some safari charges are paid at the gate, and rates change. We confirm them before you travel.
What to pack
An open jeep at dawn is cold, above all in December and January. Bring layers, a windproof jacket, a cap and a scarf for the dust.
Wear muted greens, browns and greys on safari. Carry binoculars, water and the original photo ID you booked with. Private cars cannot enter the park, so everything you need goes in a small bag at your feet.
Mistakes to avoid
One safari at Kohora and straight out. You see one slice of the park. Two or three ranges show you far more.
Late December without bookings. It is the busiest week of the year at Kaziranga, with queues at the counters. Book every slot ahead.
Kamakhya in June. The temple closes to darshan for the four days of the Ambubachi Mela. Check your dates.
No spare day. A suspended ferry or a slow road can cost you a day. One day of slack protects the rest.
Other ways to see Assam
