Most North East trips treat Guwahati as the airport you land at. This one makes it the destination.

You get five unhurried days. A morning at Kamakhya comes with the queue already handled. You see the temples almost nobody visits, and the Brahmaputra at dusk. A working tea estate sits half an hour from the hotel.

There is one main outing a day, and the afternoons are free. We send pilgrims on this trip. It suits anyone who would rather see one city properly than four in a week.

The journey at a glance

5 days, shaped around you.

  1. Day 01

    Arrival - and nothing else

    Arrival

Arrival - and nothing else - Arrival

Met at Guwahati airport or railway station and taken straight to your hotel. The rest of the day is deliberately empty - unpack, rest, eat when it suits you. Kamakhya is tomorrow at its calmest hour, and arriving rested is what makes that possible. The city you have landed in was Pragjyotishpura in the old texts, the city of eastern light, and it was a seat of astronomy long before it was anything else.

  2. Day 02

Kamakhya at first light, the river at dusk

    Nilachal Hill · the Brahmaputra

Kamakhya at first light, the river at dusk - Nilachal Hill · the Brahmaputra

An early start up the Nilachal hill to Kamakhya, one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in the country, where the goddess is worshipped not as an idol but as a natural spring within a cave. We buy the VIP darshan pass rather than put you in a queue that runs for hours, and send someone who knows the temple with you. Back at the hotel by midday, with the afternoon to rest. Late in the day, the Brahmaputra Heritage Centre in its old colonial building on the bank, and the sun going down over the water.

    • Kamakhya Temple - VIP darshan
    • Temple escort
    • Brahmaputra Heritage Centre
    • Sunset over the river

The vehicle goes as far up Nilachal as vehicles are permitted, but the final approach is steps. Tell us at enquiry if assistance is needed and we will arrange it with the temple. Kamakhya also closes to darshan for the four days of the Ambubachi Mela each June - if your dates touch it, we will say so before you book.

  3. Day 03

    The city's older temples

    Half day, private vehicle

The city's older temples - Half day, private vehicle

The sacred geography almost no visitor sees. Ugratara beside the Jor Pukhuri tanks in the old city, where - as at Kamakhya - there is no image in the sanctum, only a water-filled pit. Basistha on the southern edge, an ashram where three hill streams meet and the coolest corner of Guwahati in any month. And Navagraha on Chitrachal hill, nine lingams under a red dome, one for each of the nine planets, and the reason astronomers once came to this city. Back for lunch, with the afternoon free.

    • Ugratara Temple
    • Basistha Ashram
    • Navagraha Temple
    • Afternoon at leisure

Umananda, on its island in the river, is left out by default - it needs a ferry and a climb from the jetty. We are glad to add it for travellers who want it.

  4. Day 04

A morning in the tea gardens

Guwahati → Amchong → Guwahati (≈ 30 min each way)

A morning in the tea gardens - Guwahati → Amchong → Guwahati (≈ 30 min each way)

Half an hour east of the city, 1,782 acres of tea planted since 1958 and still worked by some five hundred people. You walk the garden with a basket and learn the two-leaves-and-a-bud rule, follow the leaf through the working factory in the order it travels - withering, rolling, drying - and sit at a tasting bench where five teas from the same estate are set side by side. Lunch is three courses on the estate, much of it from their own kitchen garden. Back at the hotel by mid-afternoon.

    • Guided estate walk
    • Tea plucking
    • Working tea factory
    • Tea tasting
    • Three-course estate lunch
