One night in a heritage tea-estate bungalow near Jorhat - colonial-era planter's quarters, high ceilings, a cook who has been there decades, and a garden that runs to the horizon. It is the most expensive night of the trip and the one nobody regrets.

Two days of safaris in Kaziranga, home to about two-thirds of the world's greater one-horned rhino. A night in the heritage bungalow of a working tea estate, on a veranda built for long afternoons. And a night on Majuli, the largest river island in the world. Its Vaishnavite satras still teach dance, drum and mask-making as they have since the sixteenth century.
No permits, no altitude, and the shortest drives of any North East trip we run.

Met at Guwahati Airport or Railway Station and out along the Brahmaputra's south bank - about five hours, broken where it makes sense, and the roadside tea stalls are part of it. Kaziranga arrives as a wall of elephant grass on your left. Check in near Kohora and rest; tomorrow starts before dawn.

- Day 02
Kaziranga - two ranges, two safaris
Kaziranga
An elephant-back safari at first light through the Central range, which is the only way to get in among the tall grass rather than looking over it, and the hour when rhino, hog deer and wild buffalo are all out. Back for breakfast, then the afternoon jeep safari in the Western range at Bagori - more open, better for swamp deer and the eastern swamp partridge, and the range where tiger sightings, though never promised, most often happen. Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a tiger reserve as well as a rhino park.

Elephant safari capacity at Kaziranga is small, allocated by the forest department and often sold out weeks ahead. We apply the moment you confirm; if it cannot be had we run a second jeep safari in a different range and adjust the price rather than quietly dropping it.

Kaziranga → Jorhat
A civilised departure after breakfast and about three hours east into upper Assam, where the tea begins and does not stop. Check into a heritage planter's bungalow on a working estate. The afternoon is a walk through the gardens with someone who works them, and a factory visit to see the leaf go from plucked to graded - withering, rolling, oxidation, firing. Dinner is on the veranda.

- Day 04
Majuli, the river island
Jorhat → Nimati Ghat → Majuli
Down to Nimati Ghat and onto the ferry - about an hour and a half across the Brahmaputra, with the vehicles loaded on beside you, and it is the best hour of the trip. Majuli is flat, green, and quietly extraordinary: the satras founded in Srimanta Sankardeva's tradition still function as monasteries and as schools of dance, drum and theatre. At Samaguri Satra they have been making the papier-mâché masks used in bhaona performances for generations, and they will show you how. Overnight in an island cottage or Mishing bamboo stilt-house stay.

Majuli is the largest river island in the world and it is losing ground to the Brahmaputra every year - the island you visit is measurably smaller than the one in the guidebooks. Ferry timings are set by the river and the light, not by a schedule, and the last crossing is earlier than people expect.

A slow island morning - there is usually one more satra worth seeing, and the pottery at Salmora is made without a wheel - then the ferry back to Nimati and the drive west to Guwahati. It is a long stage, so we leave the island in good time. Check in for the last night.
