Mawsynram takes the official title for the highest average rainfall on earth, narrowly beating its better-known neighbour Sohra. In monsoon the rain is less weather than environment - villagers wear full-body knups woven from bamboo and banana leaf, and the sound is constant.

The Mawjymbuin cave here holds a huge stalagmite that has formed into the shape of a Shiva linga, dripped into being over millennia. Go in the shoulder season for views, or in July if what you actually want is to experience the rain itself.
