Khasi communities have been training the aerial roots of rubber figs across rivers for generations, and the result is a bridge that gets stronger as it ages. The double-decker at Nongriat is the famous one, and India has submitted the root bridges to UNESCO for the 2026-27 evaluation cycle - which is exactly why now is the time to go.
Getting there is around 3,000 steps down into the gorge and the same back up, so it is a real day. Stay overnight at Nongriat if you can - the crowds thin out completely by late afternoon and the swimming holes are yours.
