Mechuka sits in Shi-Yomi district at about 6,000 feet, a long way past Aalo on a road that is a project rather than a route. The valley floor is flat and grassy with the Siyom river braided through it, hills on both sides, and the Tibet border a short distance north - which is why there is an army presence and why the permits matter.
Above the village is Samten Yongcha, a Mahayana monastery said to be around four hundred years old, and the local Memba people are culturally closer to Tibet than to the plains. There is very little to do here in the organised sense. That is precisely the product: this is the most remote place we will comfortably take you, and it feels like it.
