Mawphlang is a Law Kyntang - a sacred grove protected by Khasi custom for centuries. Nothing may be taken out of it, not a fallen branch or a stone, and the taboo has held long enough that the forest inside is a genuine relic: moss on everything, rudraksha and ancient trees, and monoliths where rituals were performed.
A Khasi guide from the village walks you through it and explains the belief system that kept it standing - which is, quietly, one of the oldest working conservation models anywhere. It's also the trailhead for the David Scott Trail.
