Majuli is reached by ferry and runs on a slower clock than the mainland. Its satras - monastic centres founded in the Vaishnavite tradition - are still living institutions, with monks who dance, drum and make the extraordinary papier-mâché masks the island is known for.
Stay in a bamboo cottage, sit in on an evening prayer, watch a mask being built from clay and cow dung and cloth, and visit the potters at Salmora who still work without a wheel. The island is also slowly eroding, which lends the whole visit a certain weight.
