Most visitors do Kamakhya and stop. The rest of Guwahati's sacred geography is more interesting and almost empty by comparison: Umananda on the smallest inhabited river island in the world, reached by ferry across the Brahmaputra; Ugratara in the old city; Basistha at a hillside spring on the southern edge; and Doul Govinda across the river in North Guwahati.

Run as one unhurried day with a private vehicle and the ferry timings worked out, this is the circuit we send faith travellers and curious first-timers on alike. It also happens to be the best way to understand how the city sits around its river.
