Wahkhen is a Khasi village in the Mawkynrew block, a couple of hours from Shillong, and the men there have built a trail of bamboo ladders, catwalks and handrails across a gorge wall - originally to reach their own fields and forest, now walked by the handful of visitors who hear about it.
It is entirely bamboo, lashed and pegged, replaced by the community as it weathers. In places you are on a metre-wide catwalk with a long drop beside you and a view down the valley that is the whole reason to be there. It is safe if you are steady and it is genuinely frightening if you are not - we will tell you honestly which one you sound like on the phone.
