Ambubachi marks the goddess's annual cycle: the temple closes for three days and reopens on the fourth, and in that window Guwahati receives one of the largest religious gatherings in eastern India - several lakh pilgrims, and sadhus who appear from all over the country.
It is extraordinary and it is intense. Rooms across the city go months in advance and the crowd around the Nilachal hill is dense throughout. If you want to see it, we need lead time - and we will be honest with you about whether it suits your group.
