Five days is enough to see the best of Kerala's south-central highlands and backwaters without rushing - if you route it well. The state markets itself as "God's Own Country," and after a few days on these green, unhurried roads you stop rolling your eyes at the slogan. Here's the flow we use.
Munnar first (2 nights)
Drive up from Kochi, stopping at the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls as the road climbs into tea country. Give Munnar two nights - one full day of sightseeing (Mattupetty, Echo Point, the viewpoints) earns its keep, and the cool hill mornings are a lovely soft start to the trip.
Thekkady for the spice country (1 night)
A night near the Periyar reserve breaks the drive and adds a completely different texture - cardamom, pepper and clove on a spice-plantation walk, and if you like, a boat on the lake at first light. One night here is plenty.
End on the backwaters (1 night)
Finish in Alleppey (Alappuzha). Whether you stay lakeside or on a converted-rice-barge houseboat, the slow water is the right note to end on before the drive back to Kochi. If you can spare an extra day, the houseboat overnight is the upgrade worth making.
